HMRC forced to fact up to poor decisions on businesses

Half the fines imposed on businesses from filing VAT returns late may be incorrect according to an analysis of HMRC’s figures.

Figures in 2013 say that 49% of 17,200 appeals made by businesses against late filing penalties were successful. It goes without saying; credit to HMRC who say the system of automatic fines is leading to a breakdown in trust between businesses and HMRC.

49%! Well at least you can say they got 51% right if that’s any consolation, which frankly if I was the one who was being fined improperly it wouldn’t be.

Come on HMRC –  what’s happening?!
