One person who would not disagree with this is Birmingham City FC chairman, David Sullivan.
Sullivan has given a rather interesting insight into his recent experience of a lengthy and intrusive investigation.
Sullivan was arrested along with Karen Brady, former chief executive, on suspicion of conspiracy to defraud and false accounting.
Although it was revealed that the pair would not be prosecuted as part of the joint investigation by City of London Police and HMRC, the experience has left a nasty taste in Sullivan’s mouth.
Mr Sullivan explained that he felt like he was ‘being treated like a drugs dealer or a bank robber’ and expressed his disappointment in the whole affair.
“I had six policemen turning upside down (my house). They raided the club. They could see we (had) done nothing wrong whatsoever but it does leave a little stain on your character.”
Sullivan and Brady were arrested in connection with an investigation into transfers of players from a particular agent and although there had been two or three transfers completed through this particular agent, no further action was taken.
However, Sullivan is still upset by the whole experience and added:-
“I am never going to get a knighthood but Karen might have got one but she might not get one now. Unfortunately, it does damage you because there’s no smoke without fire – that’s what people say.”
