HMRC taskforces are set up to focus on a particular high-risk industry in specific areas of the country. HMRC’s latest taskforce to be announced will focus on tax evasion and landlords in Scotland.
Taskforces released by HMRC are in response to £917m funding from the Government last year to tackle tax avoidance, tax evasion and tax fraud in the UK; in hopes of reducing the £35bn tax deficit.
Chief Secretary to the Treasury, Danny Alexander, said:
“It is not right that some landlords in Scotland have chosen to deliberately evade the taxes they should be paying. This is not fair on honest businesses and HMRC will come down hard on those who have chosen to break the rules.
“if you deliberately seek to evade tax, HMRC can and will track you down and you’ll face not only a heavy fine, but possibly a criminal prosecution as well.”
HMRC planned 12 taskforces in 2011/2012 and have planned a further 30 taskforces for 2012/2013.
Kevin Kinsella, of KinsellaTax, said:
“On top of the financial disasters at Rangers FC now this is happening. One cannot excuse landlords deliberately avoiding payment of tax on income. Why living in the UK is not worth paying your way is beyond me.”
