HMRC venture into grave digging
The businessman planned to leave the cash in his aunt’s grave for 20 years in an attempt to hide it from HMRC.
However, thanks to a tip of, tax inspectors were granted permission from the priest to dig the grave up to get their hands on their £50,000 share.
The unnamed man was going to leave the cash for 20 years which is the time limit for HMRC to open an investigation.
Dave Hartnett, permanent secretary for tax, said:-
“Tax evasion isn’t a victimless crime. But we’re getting better at catching cheats. It’s not worth the risk.”
In April 2010, it was revealed that HMRC paid informers £437,000 in return for tip-offs of tax evasion since 2007 and prosecutes around 200 people each year.
